Since Spring Semester 2017, Belgian legal scholar Nick Hallemeesch is a Teaching Assistant at the China-EU School of Law. “In today’s highly sophisticated world, education and academia should foster mutual understanding between jurisdictions and cultures,” Nick explains his motivation to teach in Beijing.
Nick is currently pursuing his PhD at the University of Leuven, Belgium, with a dissertation on corporate and financial law aspects of shareholders' agreements. During his Master’s studies in Leuven, he interned at the law firms Clifford Chance and Linklaters, and he was president of the Leuven branch of the European Law Students’ Association (ELSA). “I believe it is important for students and researchers alike to have an international mindset,” Nick emphasises.
In Leuven, Nick taught the “Methodology of Law” course for more than three years, before moving to the US to obtain an LL.M. from Harvard Law School. At Harvard, he familiarised himself with the Socratic teaching style that focuses on giving students questions, not answers. “I learned how to make students actively participate in class, how to lead group discussions, and how to help them improve the quality of their written work and oral presentations.” This is what he will offer to CESL’s students.
