Universität Hamburg’s Faculty of Law is deeply concerned by the Hungarian Parliament’s decision on 4 April 2017 to adopt the recently proposed amendments to the Hungarian Education Law making further operations of Central European University (CEU) in Budapest impossible. The Faculty of Law expresses its solidarity with the students, faculty and staff of this internationally renowned university.
CEU and Universität Hamburg have teamed up with 14 other European and Chinese universities and legal institutions since 2008, realising one of the most important cooperative projects between Europe and China in the field of law, the China-EU School of Law in Beijing. From 13 May to 18 June, 16 Chinese China-EU School of Law students will take elective courses at CEU as part of their master’s studies in “European and International Law”. Project Coordinator Prof. Dr Hinrich Julius says: “We highly appreciate CEU as a centre of academic excellence and innovation and as a firm partner in Europe-China legal dialogue. We would bitterly regret if this university for political reasons could not conduct research and teach freely.”
The China-EU School of Law offers two master’s programmes and an exchange semester in European, international and Chinese law. Every year, around 120 law students commence their studies, usually 100 Chinese and 20 Europeans. Moreover, the China-EU School of Law organises conferences and guest lectures for legal scholars as well as professional training courses for judges, prosecutors, lawyers and civil servants.
