The German-Egyptian research project “Care Across Borders: Institutional and Behavioral Perspectives on Nursing Labour Mobility” has been selected for funding by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) under the programme Higher Education Dialogue with the Muslim World: Short-Term Measures 2026/27.
An interdisciplinary perspective
Care Across Borders examines the institutional, economic and social factors that shape the migration and labour market integration of Egyptian nursing professionals in Germany. The project brings together perspectives from law, economics and nursing sciences to develop a more comprehensive understanding of nursing labour mobility between Egypt and Germany.
The analysis will connect supply and demand dynamics in the nursing labour market with the relevant legal and institutional frameworks. It will also consider migration incentives and behavioural factors such as trust and cooperation. By combining these perspectives, the project aims to contribute to a better understanding of the opportunities and challenges associated with the recruitment, migration and professional integration of Egyptian nursing professionals in Germany.
Five partner institutions
The project brings together:
- University of Hamburg, Faculty of Law
- HAW Hamburg, Faculty of Health
- British University in Egypt, Faculty of Nursing; Faculty of Business Administration, Economics and Political Science; Faculty of Law.
- Cairo University, Faculty of Economics and Political Science
- Mansoura National University, Faculty of Nursing
This interdisciplinary cooperation will allow researchers and students from Germany and Egypt to exchange knowledge, compare perspectives and work jointly on questions related to nursing mobility and labour market integration.
Project activities
The project will run from September 2026 to February 2027. Its activities will include workshops in Egypt and Hamburg, research stays for Egyptian students in Hamburg and joint research activities involving the participating institutions.
Care Across Borders creates a platform for interdisciplinary academic exchange while strengthening cooperation between the German and Egyptian partner universities. We look forward to six months of joint research and German-Egyptian dialogue.
