Five China-EU School of Law students returned with an Honorable Mention for the Best Claimant Memorandum from the 13th Annual Willem C. Vis East International Commercial Arbitration Moot in Hong Kong. From 6 to 13 March 2016, they competed in the mock trial with 115 university teams from all over the world – amongst them teams from Harvard and Yale. Master’s students Huang Tingli, Liu Yuchi, Shi Zhong, Yang Xia and Zhang Yi were convincing in their four rounds facing University College London, Hidayatullah University, India, Pelita Harpan University, Singapore, and Mannheim University, Germany.
They had prepared for the Moot Court for five months. With their coaches, Professor Susan-Gale Wintermuth and Assistant Professor Monika Prusinowska, they deliberated and prepared in four training competitions such as the Shanghai Moot Court and the pre moot at the Beijing law firm Fangda Partners. Students also invited teams from Tsinghua University, part of China’s Ivy League “C9 group”, and from Bond University, Australia.
The five students are enrolled in the China-EU School of Law’s Master of European and International Law programme.
The annual Vis Moot Court in Vienna is one of the most prestigious international pleading competitions for law students in the world. The Vis East Moot Court in Hong Kong focuses in particular on international commercial and arbitration law. During such moot courts, students work intensively on a hypothetical court case, prepare written submissions, and finally plead on behalf of their clients against other universities from all over the globe in front of top judges or law professors. The Vis Moot prepares students to represent clients and develops oral English skills as well as critical thinking and writing skills.
