The China-EU School of Law’s Chinese partner universities will also be supported in the next round of the Chinese initiative to develop world-class universities. This was announced by the Chinese government. Tsinghua University in Beijing was selected as one of 42 so-called Double First-Class Universities. The China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL) is ranked as a university with one of the 456 Excellent Departments. The universities will immediately gain more funding from the Chinese Ministry of Education. They will also be able to recruit the best students who pass the annual national college exam.
In addition to Tsinghua, Peking University and Renmin University are “Double First-Class Universities” with an expertise in legal sciences. Excellent legal departments are supported at Wuhan University and Zhongnan University of Economics and Law in addition to CUPL.
The new initiative replaces the previous funding programmes “211 project” and “985 project”. The Chinese government still aims to promote the expansion of education within China and to strengthen China’s academic competitiveness in the world. The universities were selected in a peer review exercise under the control of the Chinese Ministry of Education.
