On 17 March 2018, the China-EU School of Law organised the Alumni Day with graduates. Five young professionals gave advice on how to enter the legal job market.
Traditionally, at the China-EU School of Law’s Alumni Day, graduates give new impetus in short lectures – this year, these were two lawyers, a Communist Party employee, a civil servant and a PhD candidate in law. “Complete many internships to be able to make a conscious decision between the different legal professions!”, Li Ruifeng, a paralegal from the US-American law firm Troutman Sanders LLP, recommended to the audience of around 100 students who were listening carefully. Jiang Luming, lawyer at the Chinese major law firm King & Wood, stressed the importance of a well-written resume in the application process. In an exemplary presentation, he analysed the CV of their fellow student Xu Siyuan with the students. Liu Kanghui from the Municipal Supervision Commission of the Beijing Commission for Discipline Inspection, the highest internal-control institution of the Communist Party in the Chinese capital, gave the advice to decide as early as possible for a career path to be able to successfully follow it. Song Guangli, a civil servant in the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology, described the selection process for Public Services in the People’s Republic. “A high score in the civil servant entrance exam is the start of it all - then all your previous study experience and internships do not matter that much any more,” she said. “Yet usually you will score higher, when you already worked hard in previous years, of course.” “There is no panacea”, An Guohui, who will soon complete his PhD in Law at the China University of Political Science and Law said. “In the end, everyone has to find his or her own way.”
