About the Project
"Economic Rationality of Litigation in the Arab Region: The limits of amending legal text" is a German-Arab cooperation project between the Faculty of Law of the University of Hamburg, the Faculty of Law and Political Science (FDSP) of the University of Sousse in Tunisia and the Faculty of Law of the British University in Egypt (BUE).
The aim of the cooperation is to introduce the methods of economic analysis of law ("Law and Economics") into the main course of study at the partner universities. This will enable the participants to jointly research current or possible modernisations in the legal texts of Arab countries (especially Egypt and Tunisia). The results obtained are then interpreted jointly by German and Arab students and scholars in an interdisciplinary environment. In this way, a better understanding of the different approaches of the legislators in both countries can be created and a North-South-South cooperation based on law and economics and promoting development can be established. The cooperation is also of great benefit to German students. The increasing number of immigrants (e.g. due to flight, work or study) from the Arab world to Western countries (especially Germany) requires a special understanding of the Muslim-dominated social rules and laws by German lawyers in order to analyse and research possible institutions and rules that can enable peaceful coexistence between Muslims and non-Muslims in Western countries.
The cooperation project consists of five pillars:
- Introductory Lectures in “Law and Economics” at the partner universities,
- Annual supplementary workshop,
- Annual summer school,
- German-Arab supervision of bachelor's and master's theses within the project and
- Introduction of practice-oriented courses.
