China’s first Domestic Violence Law was ratified in March 2016 after two decades of campaigning by women’s rights advocates. This was without doubt a significant achievement. Although China possesses a solid body of legislation for the defense of the rights and interests of women there is still much to be done. The #MeToo movement and the numerous high-profile men accused of abusive behavior, indicated that laws alone cannot improve the status quo. Social action and social awareness are two important factors that enable women’s empowerment and bring the much needed change. Prof. Yue Liling will talk about the role of women in the Chinese criminal justice and the impact of the #MeToo movement.
