  • Born in Saarbrücken in 1964, Roman Catholic, married, 2 children
  • Schooling in Bonn; German secondary school leaving certificate completed in 1983. Law degree in Trier and Cologne
  • 1990: first state examination (Referendarexamen) in Cologne, 1994: second state examination (Assessorexamen) in Düsseldorf
  • 1993: doctoral studies, 2000: Habilitation (postdoctoral qualification) in Cologne under Prof. Dr. Klaus Luig; venia legendi for the subjects of civil law, Roman legal history, and German legal history
  • Stand-in professor in Mainz, Tübingen, and Augsburg
  • 1 April 2002–present: professor for civil law, history of German law, private law in modernity at Universität Hamburg
  • 1 October 2010–present: Dean of the Faculty of Law; re-elected in 2015
  • 2012: declined a professorship in modern legal history and civil law at Goethe University Frankfurt
