Our next seminar is coming soon! On Thursday, 17 December, 2020, from 15:30 to 16:30 (CET), James Grimmelmann, Professor at Cornell Tech and Cornell Law School, will talk about "Some Underappreciated Legal Considerations for the Design of Central Bank Digital Currency." His presentation builds on his recent NBER Working Paper, specifically its Chapter 10. The LFT workshop will take place online via Zoom. Don't forget to register here.
Central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) will interact with the legal system in various ways. In particular, if a CBDC is to achieve its goals of commercial facilitating transactions, it must integrate smoothly with commercial law. In this talk, Professor Grimmelmann will describe some important features of property law that give buyers, sellers, lenders, and borrowers the confidence to collaborate and deal with each other, and how these features affect the possible designs for CBDCs.
James Grimmelmann is the Tessler Family Professor of Digital and Information Law at Cornell Tech and Cornell Law School. Grimmelmenn studies how laws regulating software affect freedom, wealth, and power. Grimmelmann tries to help lawyers and technologists understand each other by writing about digital copyright, search engines, privacy on social networks, online governance, and other topics in computer and Internet law. He tweets @grimmelm and blogs at The Laboratorium.
