Volunteering at the RLC Hamburg
What do RLC volunteers do?
The spin-off of the Refugee Law Clinic Hamburg - called RLC-KnowYourRights - is a group of qualified lawyers, law students and volunteers who are not involved in RLC’s student legal advice because they are either no longer students or can not be active as counselors.
The group works with the purpose of providing legal education and information as well as integration offers. Each service is offered bilingually in German / Arabic as well as German / Dari / Farsi and, if required, other languages. The offer is based on the current demand. Therefore they offer large events on specific subjects with individual legal advice from own advisors. In addition, they accept external requests for events or cooperations with other groups and associations working in the migration field.
The legal integration courses deserve special mention: in an 8-week project (carried out three to four times per year) the participants are informed about their rights and duties in everyday life in Germany in six separate seminars; starting with constitutional-, family- and criminal-law to tenancy-and labor-law and asylum-law. For each unit, the participants receive a seminar certificate. Those who successfully complete all courses receive a graduation certificate.
Likewise, they give advise and do educational work in refugee accommodations or organizations if requested.
They also accompany the participants after the courses. For many refugees, RLC-KnowYourRights has become a place where they can participate in social life. Some of the already graduated participants come to our projects frequently and start to volunteer for example by preparing and promoting events.
