Gülşah YAKŞİ – Gülşah is a PhD student in the field of private law at Istanbul University/TÜRKIYE She is specializing in maritime law and has authored a book on ship mortages (“Tersane Sahibinin Kanuni İpotek Hakkı”). Her research interests extend to insurance law as well. Her doctoral thesis focuses on the topic: "The Exclusion of the Carrier’s Liability". She will be a visiting scholar at the chair of Wolfgang Wurmnest from 01.10.2024 to 01.10.2025 to conduct research for her thesis.
Şule KARAKAYA - Şule is admitted to the Istanbul Bar and a doctoral candidate in private law at Ankara Hacı Bayram Veli University, Ankara/TÜRKIYE. Her doctoral dissertation focuses on “excessive damage”, i.e. losses that cannot be recovered through the general rules on interests for monetary debts. Şule’s stay at the University of Hamburg is funded by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of TÜRKIYE (TÜBİTAK). She will be a guest at the chair from 02.09.2024 to 31.08.2025 to work on her dissertation.
Melis AVSAR – Melis is an Assistant Professor (Department of Private International Law) at the University of Istanbul/TÜRKIYE. Among other responsibilities, she manages the double degree program that was set up by the University of Hamburg in cooperation with the University of Istanbul. She is currently working on her book on private international law aspects of direct actions against insurers, with a particular focus on marine insurance. She was already an esteemed guest at our institution from 01.08.2023 to 17.09.2023 and will continue her research at the chair from 03.01.2025 to 30.03.2025.

Sílvia GÓMEZ TRINIDAD – Sílvia is an associate professor of commercial law at the Universitat de Barcelona/Spain and currently principal researcher in the SIPR-COMP Jean Monnet module “Single market, IP rights and Competition Law”. Sílvia writes on competition (antitrust) law as well as corporate law and has co-chaired various EU projects, for example, the GUIDAM-COMP project on the training of Spanish judges in matters of private competition law enforcement (2019-2021). Another project she is involved in examines the effects of the digitalization on competition law, markets and payment systems. In Hamburg, Sílvia will work on a comparative case study concerning the private enforcement of competition law and also on the question to what extent sustainability goals can be taken into account when assessing conduct of firms from a competition law perspective. She was guest at the chair of Wolfgang Wurmnest from 04.09.2024 to 15.12.2024.
Caterina BENINI — Caterina is a post-doc research fellow at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan/ITALY. She works on a research project entitled “Domestic law as a component of European law on jurisdiction”, in which she investigates the impact of domestic rules on the functioning of the European jurisdiction rules. Besides the area of private international law, she is interested in international arbitration and EU law. She was a guest at the chair of Wolfgang Wurmnest from 03.04.2024 to 31.08.2024 to conduct research for her post-doc project.
Meltem Ece OBA — Ece is a research assistant and a member of the PhD program at the Koç University (Faculty of Law), Istanbul/TÜRKIYE. She writes her dissertation on cross-border prospectus liability and focuses on the general private international law issues of the topic. In addition, she examines possible collective redress mechanisms to foster investor protection. Ece’s visit to Hamburg is funded by TÜBITAK, the Turkish Scientific and Technological Research Council. She stayed at Wolfgang Wurmnest’s chair from 11.03.2024 to 14.08.2024 to conduct research for her dissertation.
María José ESTRADA MARGARETO — María José is a practicing lawyer, researcher, and a member of the PhD program at the Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria/SPAIN. She is working on sustainability issues in European competition law. María José’s stay in Hamburg was funded by the Erasmus+ Programm (SMT). She was our guest from 01.04.2024 to 30.06.2024 to finalize her dissertation.
Nikolina MIŠČEVIĆ – Nikolina is a senior research fellow at the University of Novi Sad/SERBIA since 2013. Her research interests cover contract law, the interplay of general private law and insolvency proceedings and legal aspects of AI. Her stay at the Faculty of Law in Hamburg was supported by the DAAD Eastern Partnerships program. She was at the chair of Wolfgang Wurmnest from 31.05.2024 to 14.06.2024 to conduct research on German and European private law.
Sloboda MIDOROVIĆ – Sloboda is a senior research fellow at the University of Novi Sad/SERBIA since 2014. Her research interests cover general contract terms, the legal regime of cultural assets, property restitution, and the impact of modern technologies on the development of law. Her stay at the Faculty of Law in Hamburg was supported by the DAAD Eastern Partnerships programme. She was our guest from 31.05.2024 to 14.06.2024 to strengthen her knowledge in German law.
Carla FAILLA — Carla is part of the PhD program at the University of Palermo/ITALY. She thinks about an amelioration of the regulatory framework for crypto-currencies and related activities to ensure a higher level of consumer protection. Thus, she takes a closer look at unfair practices in the B2C context. She was at the Chair to conduct research for her PhD project from 01.10.2023 to 15.12.2023.
Murat AYDIN — Murat is currently working on his PhD at the Istanbul University/TÜRKIYE. He is writing a thesis on the termination of the freight contract. He came to Hamburg to work on the comparative part of his project at the Institute of the Law of the Sea and Maritime Law at the University of Hamburg. He was our guest from 01.10.2022 to 01.10.2023.

Vojtěch VRBA — Vojtěch is currently writing his PhD at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen/CZECH REPUBLIC. His research concerns the law of general average in historical and comparative perspective and he wants to advance the historical part of his research project by consulting the maritime law collection at the University of Hamburg. Vojtěch was our guest at the Institute of the Law of the Sea and Maritime Law from 01.06.2023 to 30.06.2023.
Maria KOULOUFAKOU — Maria is currently working on her PhD at the Aristotle University of Tessaloniki/GREECE. She is writing a thesis on the issue of seaworthiness in the area of marine insurance and carriage of goods by sea. She came to Hamburg to conduct research for her project at the Institute of the Law of the Sea and Maritime Law. She was our guest from 02.05.2023 to 12.05.2023.
