Professor Wolf-Georg Ringe and Christopher Ruof recently published their article “Regulating Fintech in the EU: the Case for a Guided Sandbox” in the European Journal of Risk Regulation at Cambridge University Press. After exploring the - in the financial sector relatively new - instrument of a regulatory sandbox, the paper applies this concept to the particular situation of fintechs in the EU, taking into account its regulatory architecture, and subsequently proposing a tailored version of a sandbox for this context. This “Guided Sandbox” would be operated by the EU Member States, but with endorsement, support, and monitoring by EU institutions. The authors give a concrete policy proposal that seeks to improve both, the situation of fintechs in the EU as well as the quality of financial regulation and ultimately contribute to the future development of EU financial market governance as a whole.
