The new Master’s program “Law of the Sea and International Environmental Law” (LoSIEL) at the University of Hamburg is seeking Academic Tutors (m/f/d) for the winter semester (teaching period: November 2026 until end of January 2027).

LoSIEL is an English-taught one -year master’s program focusing on International Public Law, Law of the Sea and International Environmental Law, with tutorials designed to reinforce lecture content through interactive learning and exercises. Tutorials are taught within the modules on the Law of the Sea and International Environmental Law.

What we are looking for

We are looking for tutors with a strong legal background and very good knowledge in the area of the Law of the Sea and/or International Environmental Law.

Key Tasks

• Prepare teaching materials and teach tutorials to complement lecture content
• Support students by answering questions and helping them deepen their understanding of lecture material

Required Qualifications

• Completed legal studies (Bachelor’s + Master’s degree)
• Strong communication skills
• Proficiency in common computer applications
• Reliability, independence, and flexibility
• Willingness to teach from November until early February (tutorial period)
• Ability to teach fluently in English

Positions and Remuneration

• Number of positions: A total of four positions are available.
• Teaching load (may be adjusted depending on availability): Each tutor teaches an average of 2 teaching hours (45 minutes each) per week, plus preparation time. The total number of teaching hours per tutor is 25 hours.

Remuneration (two options):

1.  Teaching assignment contract (Lehrauftrag) 

• 75€ per teaching hour
• Payment as a single payment at the end of the semester after completion of teaching

2.  Employment as an academic tutor (monthly salary)  

• Gross monthly payment (currently, according to UHH regulations for 2 SWS / 2 teaching hours per week): ca. 490 € per month
