Lecture byMarit Hansen: (Grund-)Recht by Design - warum es (nicht) funktionieren kann
16 July 2025, 6:00 pm, by Internetredaktion
The law applies. Contrary to what is sometimes claimed, the Internet and digitalization have not led to a legal vacuum. A modern way to make the law effective is to incorporate legal requirements into the design of systems, technology and infrastructures from the outset. In many fields, this is referred to as “by design”. The General Data Protection Regulation recognizes the principle of "data protection by design". The Cyber Resilience Regulation speaks of "security by design". Similarly, "freedom of information by design", "freedom by design" or, from a completely different perspective, "lawful access by design" are proposed. What is the power of the "by design" approach? How can a principle such as “fundamental rights by design” work at all, e.g. in the development of AI systems?
The Gesellschaft Hamburger Juristen (GHJ) is delighted that Dr. h. c. Marit Hansen will be giving a lecture on the topic of
“(Fundamental) law by design - why it can (not) work”.
Dr. h.c. Marit Hansen has been the State Commissioner for Data Protection in Schleswig-Holstein since 2015 and heads the Independent State Center for Data Protection (ULD). She is a member of the Council for Information Infrastructures (RfII) and ENISA's Ad-Hoc Working Group on Data Protection Engineering and was also a member of the Data Ethics Commission.
The event will take place on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at 6:00 pm.
The venue is the plenary hall of the Hanseatic Higher Regional Court of Hamburg, Sievekingplatz 2, 20355 Hamburg.
Of course, there will be an opportunity to ask questions and make your own contributions during the discussion, which can be continued afterwards - as always at GHJ events - over a glass of wine.
You are very welcome to bring guests.
Registration is not required.
Please note that the event will take place in German.
