Social Media Bans for Children and Adolescents – The Key to Happiness for Stressed-Out Parents, or the Path to Unacceptable Surveillance of Children and Adolescents

It is now widely accepted that excessive use of social media can have a negative impact.

Children and adolescents appear to be particularly vulnerable in this regard. Politicians and society are therefore debating whether a social media ban should be introduced for them—not just during school hours, but a general ban. Australia has taken a leading role in this discussion.

In connection with the considerations regarding a ban, questions arise not only about its feasibility and effectiveness but also about legal issues.

Dr. Dreyer analyzes the challenges facing legal governance in light of new technologies, service structures, and usage practices. He is an expert on legal issues at the intersection of youth protection and data protection and serves as a senior researcher in media law and media governance at the Leibniz Institute for Media Research | Hans-Bredow Institute.

The event will take place on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at 6:00 p.m.

The venue is the plenary hall of the Hanseatic Higher Regional Court of Hamburg, Sievekingplatz 2, 20355 Hamburg.
