Center for the Interdisciplinary Study of Ancient Law (CISAL)
textbox
The 'Center for the Interdisciplinary Study of Ancient Law' (CISAL) seeks to promote an interdisciplinary approach to the study of ancient law. A close cooperation between the Faculty of Law and a group of scholars at the Department of History of the University of Hamburg shall break down the traditional boundaries of the academic disciplines and pursue intercultural research approaches which will link both ancient Rome and Greece with the cultures of the Eastern Mediterranean (Levant, Mesopotamia and Egypt). The main focus lies on the study of the development of ancient Greco-Hellenistic, Roman and Jewish law whose understanding will be investigated through a combined application of legal and historical methods.
