Wir freuen uns, Prof. Dr. Hylkje de Jong (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) im Zeitraum vom 1. bis 14. Februar 2026 als Gastprofessorin am Center for the Interdisciplinary Study of Ancient Law (CISAL) der Universität Hamburg begrüßen zu dürfen. Prof. de Jong ist Professorin für Rechtsgeschichte am Kooijmans Institute und forscht insbesondere zum byzantinischen Recht und dessen dogmatischer Weiterentwicklung im Anschluss an das römische Recht.

Während ihres Aufenthalts wird sie am 04.02.2026 um 15:00 Uhr einen Gastvortrag zum Thema „Antichrese im byzantinischen Recht: Ein Innominatvertrag“ halten. Im Mittelpunkt steht die besondere Form des Pfandrechts (ἀντίχρησις) sowie die Frage, wie sich deren Ausgestaltung im byzantinischen Recht – insbesondere anhand der Basiliken – im Vergleich zu den bekannten Fragmenten des Corpus Iuris Civilis darstellt.

Zudem wird Prof. de Jong eine viertägige Masterklasse „Die Basiliken – Einführung in das byzantinische Recht“ leiten. Ausgehend vom Corpus Iuris Civilis führt sie in die Grundlagen, die Systematik und zentrale Institute des byzantinischen Rechts ein. Im Fokus stehen insbesondere die Basiliken (Τὰ Βασιλικὰ) sowie ausgewählte Fragen des Obligationenrechts.

We are pleased to welcome Prof. Dr. Hylkje de Jong (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) as a Visiting Professor at the Center for the Interdisciplinary Study of Ancient Law (CISAL) at the University of Hamburg from 1 to 14 February 2026. Prof. de Jong is Professor of Legal History at the Kooijmans Institute and conducts research particularly on Byzantine law and its doctrinal development in continuity with Roman law.

During her stay, she will deliver a guest lecture on 4 February 2026 at 3:00 p.m. entitled “Antichresis in Byzantine Law: An Innominate Contract.” The lecture will focus on the special form of pledge known as antichresis (ἀντίχρησις) and examine how its structure and doctrinal understanding in Byzantine law—particularly as reflected in the Basilika—compare with the well-known fragments of the Corpus Iuris Civilis.

In addition, Prof. de Jong will lead a four-day masterclass entitled “The Basilika – An Introduction to Byzantine Law.” Starting from the Corpus Iuris Civilis, the course will introduce participants to the foundations, systematics, and central institutions of Byzantine law. Particular attention will be paid to the Basilika (Τὰ Βασιλικὰ) and selected topics in the law of obligations.
